TORONTO – The U.S. election had the whole world watching on Nov. 4, and as history was being made before our very eyes, the “Obama Effect” was definitely felt north of the border on the sidelines of Canada’s NBA team, the Toronto Raptors.

Its front office staff consists of three African Americans — head coach Sam Mitchell, assistant coach Alex English and senior adviser Wayne Embry, all of whom have lived through the civil rights movement and experienced racism first hand. For these leaders on the court, the American election symbolizes long-awaited change.

Our Canada Basketball staff had a chance to sit with English, 54, to talk about what it was like growing up in a segregated America and the excitement of a new dominion brought about by the election of Barack Obama.
