ORLANDO, Fla. — Dwight Howard took the phone call from someone on Barack Obama’s staff, half-seriously wondering if a job offer was forthcoming.

“Like Secretary of Defense,” the Orlando Magic center and NBA’s leading shot-blocker said.

Um, not quite. But a chance to attend Obama’s inauguration as the nation’s 44th president wasn’t a bad consolation prize, either. Howard participated in campaign rally for the president-elect, a noted basketball fan recreational player.

Howard — who joked that he’ll take the Superman cape he broke out for last year’s All-Star Game — will be among the millions in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday for the historic event, a guest of the Obama camp for the daylong celebration. Coach Stan Van Gundy reworked the week’s practice schedule just to make sure Howard could take advantage of the opportunity.

“For him to have the opportunity, especially by invitation, to go up and really witness history, I think it’s great for him,” Van Gundy said. “There’s actually a lot of things bigger than basketball. We take it seriously because it’s our job, but I think in the scheme of things, we all know.”
