WASHINGTON - The president-elect is making himself right at home in the nation’s capital.
Barack Obama got a first-hand look at a D.C. public school earlier this week while playing some basketball at the Marie Reed Community Learning Center on Champlain Street in Northwest. An Obama spokesperson says the president-elect left the Hay Adams Hotel about 5:15 p.m. Sunday and motorcaded the two miles to the recreational center.
D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty directed school leaders to open the school, which was closed, according to Fenty spokesperson Mafara Hobson. Hobson would not say whether Fenty played in the game.
The game lasted about 45 minutes.
Obama has become more visible around town over the past few days, most notably his high-profile visit to Ben’s Chili Bowl.
Obama told ABC’s “This Week” he and his wife were looking for a church to attend in Washington.
“One of the things that Michelle and I will be doing is probably visiting some churches and seeing what’s comfortable. It is tougher as president. This is not just an issue of going to church, it’s an issue of going anywhere.
“You don’t want to subject your fellow church members, the rest of the congregation, to being magged every time you go to church. And so, we’re going to try to not be disruptive to the city, but also saying we want to be part of Washington, D.C.”
Obama will be sworn in Jan. 20
