A Chance to Get Outside

30 Seconds With President Obama

President Obama is known for his prowess on the basketball court. But before a formal interview with the president on Tuesday in the East Room of the White House, John Harwood of The New York Times and CNBC asked him about another athletic pursuit.

President Obama said playing golf more had not made him better at it.

Q. How’s your golf game?

A. It’s terrible.

Q. Is it? You play enough.

A. You’re assuming that ’cause I play, I’m going to improve. I don’t take golf that seriously, actually. The reason I’ve been playing since the summer started is, it’s actually the closest thing to being outside of the bubble of anything else that I do.

I can see why presidents play as often — or enjoy playing as often as they do — because when I’m out there, it’s the only time I’m outside for any sizable stretch of time.

Q. Whom do you play with?

A. I play with all kinds of guys. I’ve played with my staff. I’ve played with a couple of cabinet members. During that moment — particularly because I’m bad — I’m just like an ordinary duffer.

Q. What do you shoot?

A. Ninety-five, you know, 92 or 93. But getting out of the confines of this place is, uh, I find useful.
