Disgruntled white voters have accused Barack Obama of running a ‘Fonzi’ scheme during his election campaign. The scheme, ultimately a reinvention of a 1950s confidence trick, relies on uncool white men giving support, both financial and electoral, to live out their hip desires vicariously through black men, and seem ‘cool’ by association. Traditionally these schemes have always suffered in terms of recession, as the opportunity for ‘cool’ behaviour by African Americans shrinks in the face of economic hardship.
White Californian academics have complained that the President has been ‘far too serious’ while in office – noting how he has travelled the country tirelessly in support of his economic stimulus, and has even been seen with holes in his shoes. The group have laid out a six-point plan for Mr Obama to get ‘back to cool’, beginning with the institution of cabinet-wide basketball games, in which the first to score a hoop has the president’s undivided attention for an hour.
