ABC News’ Vija Udenana reports: Before charming the audience with his sense of humor at White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday evening, President Obama amazed some younger players with is basketball skills Saturday afternoon.
Reggie Love, the president’s aide, who played college basketball at Duke University, had gathered six of his friends from the DC YMCA to join his boss at Ft. McNair, a US army post in SW Washington DC, for a few games.
The President’s team included Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Reggie’s brother Richard, and two friends from Chicago. Pres. Obama’s team won three games out of five of “21″ against the younger players.
The younger players admit they learned that the president is “much stronger than he looks” and said “if they were invited for a replay in 3 weeks they’d get up every morning to prepare”. They told reporters their day jobs include teaching, juvenile probation officer, software engineer, medical equipment rep and working at Barclays.
The President teased them about being out of shape, although one did manage to foul Obama, knocking him down.
The only casualty of the afternoon’s game was Reggie Love, who needed seven stitches in his chin after a collision with an unnamed player.
While they would not discuss the game, the players from the YMCA said Pres. Obama was “very personable and acted like he’s just a regular guy.”
