In the latest Men’s Journal cover story, Michelle Obama’s older brother reveals that Michelle once asked him to evaluate a young man she was dating — her future husband, President Barack Obama!
College basketball coach Craig Robinson, the first lady’s big brother, tells Men’s Journal that back in the late ’80s, he invited young Barack Obama to play in a friendly five-on-five game of basketball — so he could determine whether the young man was a good match for his sister!
“He didn’t know I was checking him out,” Robinson tells the mag. “That would have ruined the experiment.”
Robinson says Obama brought his A-game, sharing the ball with his teammates but not passing too often, because “That would have meant he was sucking up,” Robinson says. When he returned home, Robinson told his sister that Barack Obama was okay in his book, says the mag.

Much of this is old news. What’s interesting is the part about “his moves, his trash talk, and his weekly power basketball game.” And the cover. Except we wish he were holding a basketball instead of a football. But then it would look too much like a rip-off of Alexander Wolff’s definitive piece (on the same subject) in Sports Illustrated.
